A. The two Statistical Accounts of Scotland, covering the 1790s and the 1830s, are among the best contemporary reports of life during the agricultural and industrial revolutions in Europe. Users may learn more about areas of Scotland, or use this key source to study the emergence of the modern British State and the economic and social impact of the world's first industrial nation. Based largely on information supplied by each parish church minister, the original (first) Statistical Account and the New (second) Statistical Account provide a rich record of a wide variety of topics: wealth, class and poverty; climate, agriculture, fishing and wildlife; population, schools, and the moral health of the people. Q. How can I gain access to the Statistical Accounts of Scotland?
A. Access to the Statistical Accounts of Scotland enhanced service is by subscription. Individual, institutional or organisational subscriptions for the UK and overseas are available for the service.

The annual subscription period for UK higher and further education institution subscriptions runs from 1st August to 31 July. The institutional subscription rates, based on JISC banding, and a downloadable subscription form can also be found at the above web link.
For institutions subscribing part-way into this deal, the charges will be pro-rated on a 6-monthly basis. Other institutions, including schools/SLAs, overseas academic institutions and other organisations, should contact the EDINA Helpdesk at edina@ed.ac.uk with as much information about the organisation and who will be using the service as possible; the Helpdesk will be back in touch with a subscription quote and forms (if necessary)
