Case study:
Site appraisal and redevelopment project
(The 'Implementation Project')
Details of the case study
Learning outcomes:
The case study seeks to draw together many of the shared values and
perspectives of the two professions, whilst developing their spatial,
communication and team working skills.
On successful completion of stages one and two of the
module (which relate to this case study), town planning students will
be able to:
Appreciate the role and applicability of digital
mapping techniques and applications to the site evaluation and development
process.
Appreciate the key aspects of the land use planning
and development process in respect of derelict and / or under-used
sites.
Appreciate the different ethos, goals and roles
of the private and public sectors, and other related land use professions,
in the land development process.
Appreciate issues of site development / redevelopment,
including site analysis, the use of planning standards, and the
generation and evaluation of development schemes.
Analyse practical issues such as project identification,
organisation and implementation, team effort, work habits, problem
solving and the meeting of deadlines.
Apply spatial design and digital mapping techniques
in the preparation of an outline planning application scheme for
the redevelopment of a site, including details of siting, access
and location of areas of landscaping, which complies with the requirements
of a development brief and relevant planning policy guidance.
Appreciate the opportunities and benefits emerging
from digital mapping and computer aided design techniques in planning
practice.
These have been revised and updated to reflect the application
and development of digital mapping skills. (When the learning outcomes
for the module were originally set some 4 years ago, there was no appreciation
of the software which would become available in subsequent years - the
outcomes have been extended to encompass an understanding of the role
and applicability of digital mapping techniques and applications to
the site evaluation and development process.)
