December 2011: Volume 16 Issue 4
On 10 November, Digimap for Schools celebrated its first birthday. It was a year since the service was officially launched at Graveney School in Wandsworth, London by Baroness Joan Hanham CBE, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government (CLG) and Vanessa Lawrence CB, Director General and Chief Executive of Ordnance Survey.
One year on and almost 3,000 schools have registered for Digimap for Schools with a steady number taking up subscriptions each week. The ease with which staff and pupils can access maps of any area in Great Britain at a range of scales is proving popular and very valuable.
To mark the first birthday, new tools to save maps and edit annotations were added to Digimap for Schools. The ability to save maps means teachers can create maps to be used in class beforehand and pupils can save maps for the teacher to retrieve and mark.
In conjunction with Ordnance Survey, a monthly Mystery Maps challenge has been launched on the Digimap for Schools blog. Key names and identifiers will be hidden so teachers can work with pupils in class to identify the location. The location of the mystery map will be revealed on the Digimap for Schools Twitter feed (@Digimap4Schools) the following month.
