EDINA, a JISC-funded data centre based at the University of Edinburgh, is offering this workshop to introduce geospatial metadata, online GoGeo resources, and the open and closed versions of ShareGeo, a spatial data repository. Workshop participants will also be introduced to a range of accessible web sources for spatial data.
The workshop is part an effort to introduce and promote online resources to support research and teaching and learning activities as well as spatial data management and sharing across the UK Higher and Further Education communities. The workshop will also provide an overview of the European Commission's INSPIRE Directive, which was transposed into UK law in December 2009. This law applies to the UK academic community and mandates the creation of metadata for spatial datasets.
The geospatial metadata workshop activities will include a one hour presentation which will cover the following topics:
and a one hour hands-on session for workshop participants who want to learn more about the:
**Practicals will be provided for participants.
Workshop participants interested in creating metadata are encouraged to bring the following information for their spatial datasets:
Geodoc, and the closed version of ShareGeo (Digimap Services), can be accessed through the UK Access Management Federation (Shibboleth) authentication service. Please have your username and password for the workshop, though temporary trial usernames and passwords will be provided at the workshop.
If you would like further information about this event, or clarification with regards to the spatial dataset information to bring, please e-mail Tony Mathys (tony.mathys@ed.ac.uk) or call EDINA Help Desk at (0)131 650 3302.
